Sunday morning
the gospel
according to birds

-Johnette Downing

pushing the clouds
away
my oar

-Johnette Downing

sneaking past the old dog
unnoticed
old cat

-Johnette Downing

roofers next door
their shadows work
on my house

-Johnette Downing

silk scarves
in the breeze
my ancestors

-Johnette Downing

tai chi class
the weight
of air

-Johnette Downing

Moroccan sky
the clouds
in Arabic

-Johnette Downing

watching the crowd
eyes of the portrait
sitter

-Johnette Downing

dawn on the sand bar
the river’s new
shape
